Protecting Your Identity

At FNB of Central Alabama, keeping your information secure is one of our most important responsibilities.

We want to provide some helpful information to protect you from identity theft and other scams, as well as resources should a lost or stolen identity affect you.

If you are contacted by FNB of Central Alabama:

  • Be positive you know with whom you are speaking on the phone BEFORE giving out Credit Card, Debit Card or bank account numbers
  • FNB of Central Alabama will NOT ask for your ATM or Debit Card PIN (personal identification number) for any reason
  • FNB of Central Alabama will NEVER contact you via e-mail regarding sensitive financial information
  • If you receive a phone call from someone identifying himself or herself with FNB of Central Alabama and you are unsure of the person’s identity, hang up and call us back to verify the authenticity of the person with whom you are speaking

E-mail Fraud

FNB of Central Alabama, as well as other institutions such as the IRS, FDIC and Department of Homeland Security, will never request personal, financial or security information from you via email. This practice is known as “phishing” or “spoofing” and is used by thieves to steal your identity. Report a phishing attempt by contacting your local branch.

Using Credit & Debit Cards Safely

Whether you are traveling, enjoying a night out or shopping, be careful and aware of your surroundings when using your credit and debit cards for purchases and ATM withdrawals.

  • Guard your card numbers and pin numbers carefully and take action immediately if you think they have been compromised.
  • Memorize your PIN, do not keep with your card
  • Use your Debit MasterCard® as a credit transaction when possible
  • Review your accounts regularly to check for incorrect charges
  • Do not carry your Social Security card or number with you

What If My Wallet Is Lost or Stolen?

1. Quickly report the loss and file a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your wallet was stolen (this proves to credit providers that you were diligent). It is a good idea to keep a list of contact information and account numbers for wallet contents in a safe place – (or photocopy the front and back of all of your cards) so that you have the information to quickly report a loss. If you are traveling keep a copy of your passport for identification.

2. Immediately call the three national credit-reporting organizations to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. This alert notifies companies that review credit that your information was stolen and that you must be contacted by phone before new credit can be authorized.
allows you to obtain a free credit report once a year from each of the credit reporting agencies. It is important to review this detailed credit history and be diligent about resolving any discrepancies.

 Tips For Added Protection

  • The next time you order checks, use your first initial instead of first name in the address area. If someone takes your checkbook they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but FNB of Central Alabama does. You continue to sign the checks the same as always.
  • When you are writing checks to pay your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the “For” line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won t have access to it.
  • Put your work phone number on your checks instead of your home phone number.
  • If you have a PO Box, use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address.
  • Never have your Social Security number printed on your checks.
  • Cancel your credit cards immediately if they are stolen. Being prepared by keeping a list of toll-free numbers and your card numbers in a safe place is key.
  • Make a photocopy of the contents of your wallet – copy both sides of your driver’s license, credit cards, etc. Keep the photocopy in a safe place, NOT IN YOUR WALLET.
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport when you travel here or abroad.
